A solidarity tote bag to train and help mothers in the slums

The concept

Training and finding work to improve their children's daily lives and send them to school is the primary objective of mothers in extreme poverty! The We Act For Kids action fund has linked a Madagascan association and the Jacadi brand to create a social business to help mothers in the slums of Antananarivo.

The action

There are a dozen of them who want to get out of this situation at all costs. The association Tohana (support in Malagasy) has created a sewing training workshop in the centre of the shanty town. Jacadi used old Liberty fabric rolls to produce a tote bag and put it on sale in France and Europe. LOI, one of Jacadi's suppliers in Madagascar, helped with the training and implementation of the project. The 12 mothers were trained and sewed and embroidered a first order of 3000 bags.

Paid both during their training and production, they also received an allowance on top of their salary, which enabled them to send their children to school. A next product for Jacadi is planned for the end of the year and the workshop is keen to expand and find more orders.

The impact

3000 Jacadi-Tohana tote bags sold in 1 month.

Of the 14 mothers in the first class, 8 found jobs in a sewing workshop or a factory and 2 created their own business.
